Traditional Skiff Regatta
Each year during the Museum’s August traditional skiff sailing event, boaters race around the islands for the Shanghai Trophy. Originally, the Shanghai Trophy was awarded to a winner in the Comet class. The disappearance of Comets from the sound left the cup in limbo, but, after the resurgence of local recreational sailing activity in the late 1950’s, it resurfaced and has been awarded to the winner of that class of boats with greatest representation in the race. In the last few years’, spritsail skiffs have battled for this historic trophy, which resides in the Web Library. This race starts in front on the Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center on Taylors Creek at about 9 a.m. Event organized by the Traditional Small Craft Association, The Friends of the NC Maritime Museum Chapter. 252.728.1638 Best viewing time for spectators from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
