What You’ll Learn
With no more than three students per boat, you’ll receive personalized instruction and meaningful time at the helm.
On-the-Water Training
- Pre-departure checks
- Boat parts, engine controls & basic operation
- “Pier. Steer. Gear.” fundamentals
- Safe boat handling practices
- Precision buoy approaches (without contact)
- Steering straight, standard stops & slow avoidance maneuvers
- Pivot & 180° turns
- Navigation aids in real time
- Docking techniques
- Man-overboard drills
- Beaching & anchoring procedures
Classroom Instruction
- Required USCG safety equipment
- Rules of the Road
- Nautical charts & navigation aids
- Tides, currents & environmental factors
- Wind effects & crossing wakes
- Float plans
- Weather awareness
- Flares & fire safety
- VHF marine radio & emergency calls
- Responding to medical emergencies
You’ll leave with more than skills—you’ll have the judgment and awareness that make a better boat driver.
Prerequisite
Complete the North Carolina Safe Boating Course before attending (unless you already hold your certificate).
