Gallants Channel
Gallants Channel is a state-owned waterfront property in Beaufort envisioned as a place where maritime history, education, recreation and community connection can grow together.
A Place With Extraordinary Potential
The 31-acre Gallants Channel property offers expansive waterfront access and room for maritime programming that cannot be fully accommodated at the Museum’s Front Street location.
The site has long been part of a broader vision for the future of the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort. Planning concepts have explored educational facilities, outdoor gathering areas, waterfront improvements, community programming and a future expanded museum campus.
The Friends of the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort supports the Museum and works with public and private partners to strengthen opportunities for maritime education, preservation and public engagement.
Education | Access | Community
Gallants Channel creates opportunities to connect people of all ages with the water, North Carolina’s maritime traditions and one another.
Maritime Education
The site provides valuable space for hands-on learning, sailing, boating and other programs that connect classroom instruction with real waterfront experiences.
Waterfront Access
Its shoreline and open space offer possibilities for docks, water-based programs, outdoor interpretation and expanded public access to Beaufort’s maritime environment.
Community Connection
Gallants Channel can support gatherings, educational events and partnerships that bring residents, visitors, students and maritime organizations together.
What We Know Today
Gallants Channel remains an important part of the long-term vision for the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort. Earlier plans and studies describe potential future facilities and economic impact, but project scope, funding, design, construction phases and timelines are subject to continued state planning and approval.
As decisions develop, the Friends is committed to sharing information responsibly and distinguishing between concepts under consideration, approved projects and completed improvements.
A Long-Term Maritime Campus Vision
Historic planning work for Gallants Channel has considered a campus that could complement the Museum’s Front Street properties and expand the ways the Museum serves the public.
- Expanded space for Museum exhibits and collections.
- Facilities for maritime and marine-science education.
- A permanent waterfront home for sailing and boating programs.
- Outdoor areas for recreation, interpretation and public gatherings.
- Space for community events, partnerships and civic use.
- Waterfront and support improvements needed for a larger campus.
