Gallants Channel, a 31-acre waterfront site owned by the State of North Carolina, represents a $15 million investment and will be the location for a new and expanded North Carolina Maritime Museum; a campus that will greatly enhance the Museum’s current offerings at the Front Street properties in Beaufort.
The Friends of the NC Maritime Museum (Friends) was asked by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) to help develop a Site Plan for Gallants Channel. The Friends and the Maritime Heritage Foundation of Beaufort, NC, Inc., in partnership with the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, DCNR, and the Town of Beaufort, NC will engage additional interested parties and partners to produce a comprehensive list of potential site features.
The Maritime Heritage Foundation will fund surveys and environmental assessments and select a Land Planner to prepare a Master Site Plan for the Gallants Channel Campus.
This Master Plan will include a large Museum building/exhibit hall, a park like area on the waterfront, an education building, and necessary support features.
Additionally, there will be plans developed for the building to be used for education, administration, and civic events that will form the basis for design and construction of a Maritime Education Center.
This Maritime Education Center, along with waterfront improvements, will provide a permanent home for the popular Junior Sailing Program and make space available for additional Museum programing, educational activities, community events, and office space for the Friends of the Museum.
